Tony Elumelu Backs ECOWAS Investment Summit as President Bio Pushes Regional Integration
By Amin Kef (Ranger)

The West Africa Integration and Investment Summit (WAIIS), a flagship initiative championed by the Chairman of ECOWAS and President of Sierra Leone, Dr. Julius Maada Bio, has received a significant boost following a high-level meeting with renowned African investor and philanthropist, Tony Elumelu.

The engagement, which took place on Sunday, 14 June 2026, in Abuja, Nigeria, saw Tony Elumelu pledge his full support for the regional economic initiative, reinforcing confidence in the Summit's vision of accelerating economic integration and investment across West Africa.

Scheduled to take place from 16 to 18 November 2026, WAIIS is being convened under President Bio's leadership as a transformative platform aimed at bringing together Governments, development partners, investors, financial institutions and private sector leaders to promote sustainable economic growth and regional prosperity.

The Summit comes at a historic period as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) commemorates its 50th anniversary since its establishment in 1975. President Bio has consistently advocated for renewed regional cooperation, emphasizing that stronger economic integration is essential for expanding trade, attracting investment and fostering industrial development across West Africa.

Held under the theme, "Powering Regional Integration through Energy Trade, Strategic Minerals, Agribusiness and Digital Transformation," the Summit seeks to unlock new investment opportunities by focusing on four key strategic sectors. These include energy trade and industrial growth, strategic minerals and natural resource development, agribusiness and food systems transformation, and digital innovation and connectivity.

Organizers believe those priority areas will strengthen regional competitiveness, accelerate industrialization, improve food security, expand access to reliable energy and position West Africa as an increasingly attractive destination for local and international investment.

Special Envoy for the Summit and one of its principal architects, Dr. Kandeh K. Yumkella, said WAIIS is designed to move beyond policy discussions by delivering practical outcomes through investment frameworks, analytical reports and a pipeline of bankable regional projects capable of attracting substantial public and private sector financing.

According to Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, the Summit will create opportunities for strategic partnerships, enhance public-private sector collaboration and identify priority investments that can support industrial growth, strengthen food systems, improve energy access and expand digital connectivity throughout the ECOWAS region.

The endorsement by Tony Elumelu is widely viewed as a major milestone for the initiative. As one of Africa's leading entrepreneurs and advocates for private sector-driven development, his support is expected to encourage greater investor participation and strengthen confidence in the Summit's objectives.

During the meeting, Tony Elumelu commended President Bio's leadership and the Summit's focus on delivering practical economic transformation through regional cooperation and investment. He also expressed his readiness to provide financial support and to mobilize influential African business leaders and private sector stakeholders to actively participate in the Summit and its follow-up activities.

His commitment is expected to increase the Summit's visibility among investors, development finance institutions and business leaders across the continent and beyond, while underscoring the important role of the private sector in driving regional integration and sustainable economic development.

With preparations gaining momentum, the West Africa Integration and Investment Summit is emerging as one of the region's most ambitious economic platforms, with the potential to align political leadership, private capital and development priorities around a shared vision of a more integrated, competitive and prosperous West Africa. https://thecalabashnewspaper.com/tony-elumelu-backs-ecowas-investment-summit-as-president-bio-pushes-regional-integration/
