Sierra Leone erupted in celebration over the weekend as citizens from across the country gathered at the Presidential Lodge in Freetown to honour His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio, following his historic election as Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The landmark achievement, which positions Sierra Leone at the heart of regional diplomacy, was met with an outpouring of support from the nation’s security apparatus, civil society, Parliament, international dignitaries and ordinary citizens alike. Messages of congratulations acknowledged President Bio’s consistent leadership and his pivotal role in enhancing Sierra Leone’s stature on the global stage.
Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Amara Idara Bangura, described the President’s elevation as a moment of national pride. “From leading discussions at the United Nations Security Council to now steering ECOWAS, you have showcased the strength and resilience of Sierra Leone. The Armed Forces proudly stand behind you as you assume this important continental responsibility,” he declared.
Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu, echoed this sentiment, applauding the President for restoring dignity and national pride. “You have given Sierra Leoneans a renewed sense of identity and pride. We are confident in your ability to navigate the complex dynamics of regional leadership,” he said.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Timothy Kabba, highlighted the President’s calm diplomacy and commitment to peace. “Your leadership is grounded in humility and foresight. At a time when the region is facing uncertainty, ECOWAS is in the hands of a proven peacebuilder,” he noted.
Parliament also voiced its commendation through Speaker Hon. Sengeh Paul Thomas Esq., who declared, “This is a defining moment for our country. Your leadership on global issues, including the push for reform at the United Nations Security Council, has earned the respect of your peers. Sierra Leone stands tall because of you.”
In a stirring demonstration of regional solidarity, Hon. Rebecca Wesseh of the Liberian Parliament presented a commemorative plaque to President Bio on behalf of her country. “This is not just a win for Sierra Leone, it is a beacon of hope for West Africa. Liberia is proud to stand with you. You have our admiration and full support,” she said.
Representing the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), First Lady Madam Fatima Maada Bio expressed her admiration and that of her counterparts across the continent. “You lead with vision, purpose and unwavering integrity. African First Ladies will support your regional priorities to ensure your tenure leaves a lasting legacy,” she said.
Taking the podium to a rapturous welcome, President Bio thanked Sierra Leoneans for their unwavering support, describing his new role as a shared national triumph. “This honour is not mine alone; it belongs to every Sierra Leonean. Our country has emerged from difficult times, but today we are being recognized for our resilience and our leadership,” he said.
The President reflected on his journey, attributing his values to formative experiences at Bo Government Secondary School and the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces. “These institutions taught me to lead with discipline and humility. I have never sought power for its own sake. My mission has always been to serve you, the people,” he said.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to human capital development as the foundation for progress, pledging to apply the same principles to his ECOWAS leadership. “We must continue to dream big, believe in ourselves and lead boldly not just for Sierra Leone, but for West Africa.”
The ceremony concluded with a resounding show of national unity and optimism. As music filled the Presidential Lodge and citizens waved flags in celebration, Sierra Leone marked a proud new chapter in its history led by a President whose vision continues to resonate across borders and beyond. https://thecalabashnewspaper.com/sierra-leone-celebrates-president-julius-maada-bios-election-as-ecowas-chairman/
