SLAJ President Demands Clarity and Safety for Journalist Thomas Dixon Amid Police Dispute
By Amin Kef (Ranger)Ahmed Sahid Nasrallah, President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), issued a statement on Saturday December 28, 2024 addressing the ongoing situation involving journalist Thomas Dixon and the Inspector General of Police (IG), Mr. Fayia Sellu.Nasrallah confirmed that SLAJ is actively monitoring the situation, which initially suggested a potential arrest of Dixon. "We want to assure our members and the general public that Thomas Dixon has NOT been arrested," he stated. The tensions arose after a Facebook post by Dixon described the IG as "arrogant." Following this, the IG contacted Nasrallah to express his frustration, claiming that Dixon had misrepresented him despite having provided clarification over the phone. The IG indicated that arresting the journalist had been considered. In response, Nasrallah advised the IG against pursuing arrest and proposed alternative actions, such as filing a formal complaint with the Independent Media Commission (IMC) or communicating directly with SLAJ.After their conversation, Nasrallah reached out to Dixon, who confirmed he was at home. As a precaution, Nasrallah advised him to temporarily leave his residence to ensure his safety. To further de-escalate the situation, Nasrallah re-engaged the IG, stressing the importance of maintaining a positive relationship between SLAJ and the security sector. The IG acknowledged the advice but urged journalists to uphold professionalism in their work. The Price of Truth: Thomas Dixon's Case Reveals Dangers Facing Journalists
By Amin Kef (Ranger)

In a concerning development for press freedom in Sierra Leone, renowned journalist Thomas Dixon has reportedly gone missing following alarming threats from the Inspector-General of Police, William Fayia Sellu. Dixon's disappearance has sparked outrage among civil society advocates and fellow journalists, who emphasize the vital importance of media freedom in a democratic society.

Dixon's disappearance comes on the heels of a critical X and Facebook post in which he accused the IGP of rescinding a court bail and transferring the crime officer involved.

Augustine Sorie-sengbe Marrah, a prominent civil and commercial litigator and democracy activist, condemned the situation, stating, "If the unconfirmed reports are true that Thomas Dixon is in hiding or held up incommunicado, then this is like rolling back the hands of progress." Marrah criticized the government's contradictory actions of repealing criminal seditious libel laws while simultaneously repressing journalists. "Journalists should not be on the run because of their work," he asserted.

The Gleaner Newspaper reported that Dixon's family has not heard from him since the threats emerged, deepening fears for his safety. Efforts to contact the IGP for comment have been unsuccessful, further escalating concerns regarding the treatment of journalists in Sierra Leone.

Alex Lawrence Koroma, a fellow broadcast and print journalist, urged the government, under President Julius Maada Bio, to prioritize the safety of Dixon and uphold his rights to engage in professional journalism. "It is concerning that he has been reported missing while fulfilling his journalistic duties. Immediate action is necessary," Koroma stated.

In a recent post, Dixon detailed a phone conversation with the IGP, in which he was told to put his concerns in writing rather than receiving direct answers. "The arrogant IGP told me on the phone that I should write instead of answering my questions," Dixon remarked. He alleged that the IGP rescinded a bail for a suspect at the West End Police Station and subsequently transferred the crime officer handling the case, creating a chilling atmosphere among police officers who are now hesitant to engage with the matter.

This troubling incident raises significant questions about media freedom in Sierra Leone, with Marrah emphasizing, "Media freedom is not a favor—it is an integral aspect of democracy." He called for respect and protection of journalists' rights, insisting that "freedom of expression and the media cannot wait and must not be delayed in any democracy."

As the situation develops, the safety of Thomas Dixon and the broader implications for press freedom in Sierra Leone remain a pressing concern. Journalists are not criminals, and their right to report should be protected. https://thecalabashnewspaper.com/the-price-of-truth-thomas-dixons-case-reveals-dangers-facing-journalists/

US Coast Guard Trains Sierra Leone Navy and Police in Maritime Security
By Amin Kef (Ranger)

From December 9th to 20th, 2024, the United States Government, through its Office of Security Cooperation, conducted an Outboard Motor Maintenance (OMM) course for 20 personnel from Sierra Leone’s Navy and the Sierra Leone Police Marine Division. The training took place at the Naval Base in Murray Town, Freetown and was facilitated by a team from the U.S. Coast Guard’s International Mobile Training Branch, headquartered in Yorktown, Virginia.

The course combined classroom instruction and hands-on practical lessons, equipping participants with critical skills in maintaining various types of boat engines. This initiative aims to enhance the operational readiness of Sierra Leone’s maritime security forces by ensuring their patrol boats remain reliable and functional.

Captain (Navy) Abdul Karim Dumbuya, Western Naval Commander of Sierra Leone, emphasized the importance of such training programs. “Courses like the OMM are essential for equipping our Navy and Police personnel with the skills necessary to maintain our fleet and ensure operational readiness,” he stated.

Lieutenant Kyle Pope of the U.S. Coast Guard expressed appreciation for the collaboration. “We are grateful for the opportunity to exchange best practices and strengthen partnerships with the Sierra Leone Navy and Police,” he noted.

The OMM course highlights the vital role of preparedness in maritime security, a cornerstone for protecting Sierra Leone’s coastal waters. It addresses pressing challenges such as illegal fishing, transnational crime and maritime emergencies. By enhancing technical skills and promoting self-reliance, the training supports Sierra Leone's ability to safeguard its maritime assets and bolster regional economic stability.

This initiative is part of a broader partnership between the United States and Sierra Leone to strengthen the nation’s maritime capabilities. Earlier this year, the U.S. Embassy in collaboration with the U.S. Coast Guard and the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) organized training programs focused on responding to maritime emergencies and combating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The U.S. Embassy in Freetown reaffirmed its commitment to this ongoing collaboration. “We look forward to continuing our partnership with the RSLAF and contributing to the professionalization of Sierra Leone’s military and maritime forces,” a spokesperson stated.

This joint effort underscores the shared commitment of the United States and Sierra Leone to ensuring maritime safety, security and economic prosperity in the region. https://thecalabashnewspaper.com/us-coast-guard-trains-sierra-leone-navy-and-police-in-maritime-security/

Mandatory ID Card Checks Begin January 1, 2025, Across Sierra Leone
By Amin Kef (Ranger)

The National Civil Registration Authority (NCRA), in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) and the Office of National Security (ONS), has on December 20, 2024 issued a public notice reminding residents, both citizens and non-citizens, to obtain their National, Non-National or ECOWAS ID Cards before December 30, 2024. The notice, signed by NCRA Director-General, Mohamed Mubashir Massaquoi, National Security Coordinator Abdulai Caulker and Inspector General of Police William Fayia Sellu, states that ID card checks will commence across the country starting January 1, 2025.

These checks will be conducted at various security checkpoints and in communities nationwide as part of an effort to ensure reliable identification for all residents. Heads of state institutions have been instructed to enforce compliance with legislation linking access to essential services to National Identification Numbers (NINs) or ID Cards.

The NCRA emphasizes that ID Cards are now mandatory for accessing services, including:

- Financial transactions (banks, forex bureaus, insurance)

- Vehicle registration and licensing

- Public and private sector recruitment

- NASSIT enrollment

- Land and property registration

- Enrollment in educational institutions and public exams

- SIM card registration

- Vital events registration (birth, death, marriage, etc.)

- Immigration services (resident/work permits)

- Business registration and incorporation

Citizens and foreign residents are urged to obtain their Biometric ID Cards at any NCRA office or registration center nationwide. The National and Non-National ID Cards are mandatory, while the ECOWAS ID Card is issued upon request.

Introduced in 2023, Biometric ID Cards feature advanced security measures, including fingerprint scanning, facial recognition and embedded secure chips. These cards aim to:

- Strengthen national and individual security.

- Simplify access to essential public and private services.

- Prevent identity theft and fraudulent activities.

An NCRA official noted, “These Biometric ID Cards enhance security and ensure that citizens and institutions are safeguarded from identity fraud.”

Biometric ID Cards are available to:

- Sierra Leonean citizens aged 12 and above.

- ECOWAS nationals residing in Sierra Leone.

- Foreign residents, who are required by law to obtain Non-National ID Cards for work and residence permits.

To apply:

- Visit an NCRA office or registration center.

- Complete the registration form with personal details.

- Provide biometric data, including fingerprints and facial scans.

- Collect the ID card upon processing.

Registration centers are located in major towns, including Bo, Kenema, Makeni, Port Loko and various offices across Freetown.

In a parallel initiative to boost security and prevent cybercrime, the NCRA is expediting efforts to link NINs to mobile phone SIM cards. Failure to comply may result in the deactivation of telecommunications services, including mobile money transfers and voice calls.

Director-General, Mohamed Mubashir Massaquoi, recently chaired a high-level meeting with stakeholders from the National Telecommunications Commission (NaCTA), Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and the SLP to ensure a smooth integration process.

The NCRA underscores that securing a Biometric ID Card is both a personal responsibility and a civic duty. By carrying your ID Card and linking your NIN to your SIM card, you contribute to national security and help build a more efficient and digitally inclusive Sierra Leone.

For further information, visit any NCRA office, contact the Authority via www.ncra.gov.sl or call +232 33 939740 / +232 79 578063.

As part of its efforts towards expanding its network to other destinations within the West African sub region, further enhancing regional connectivity, the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA), led by its Director General, Madam Musayeroh Barrie, has on Thursday 19th December, 2024 at a ceremony held at the Freetown International Airport inaugurated Overland Airways, a prominent Nigerian airline, to Sierra Leone’s aviation sector. Overland Airways will begin operating flights from Freetown, Sierra Leone, to Lagos, Nigeria, offering greater connectivity between the two West African countries.

This milestone reflects Sierra Leone’s growing position as a key player in regional air transport and supports the country's vision for enhanced economic and tourism opportunities. Overland Airways has a strong reputation for safety and efficiency and their decision to launch this route is a testament to the growing confidence in Sierra Leone's aviation infrastructure.

In his remarks, Captain Edward Boyo, Managing Director of Overland Airways, expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the warm reception extended to the airline in Sierra Leone and reaffirmed Overland Airways’ dedication to fostering partnerships and contributing to the growth of the country’s aviation sector.

He emphasized the significance of the occasion in celebrating the enduring relationship between Sierra Leone and Nigeria. “The inauguration of our services here symbolizes the resilience and growing bond between our two nations, paving the way for mutual economic benefits,” he remarked.

He highlighted Overland Airways’ excitement at launching the Freetown-to-Lagos route, describing it as a pivotal moment in enhancing regional air connectivity. “This marks an exciting step toward strengthening regional air travel and fostering closer business and cultural ties between Sierra Leone and Nigeria,” he stated.

Captain Boyo reiterated the airline’s commitment to providing safe, reliable and comfortable air travel for passengers. “As we expand our network within West Africa, Overland Airways is dedicated to playing a key role in the growth of the aviation industry across the region while continuously improving the travel experience for all our customers,” he concluded.

Madam Musayeroh Barrie, Director General, Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA), emphasized the milestone’s importance for Sierra Leone's aviation industry. “Today, we are not just celebrating the arrival of a new airline; we are witnessing a new chapter in the story of our nation’s connectivity to the world,” she stated. The Director General highlighted the potential of Overland Airways to enhance global connections, boost tourism and drive economic growth.

The new airline service strengthens ties between Sierra Leone and Nigeria, offering direct flights that simplify travel for business, cultural exchange and family connections. “This is about connecting hearts, minds and communities,” remarked Madam Musayeroh Barrie, adding that the service would ease travel for Sierra Leone’s Nigerian diaspora while promoting trade and tourism opportunities.

Ambassador Frank Azuike, the Nigerian High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, lauded the occasion as a historic moment, reflecting the strong and growing ties between Sierra Leone and Nigeria. “This new airline service is not just about connecting two cities; it is about connecting hearts, minds and communities,” he stated.

Overland Airways, a Nigerian airline with decades of operational experience, has introduced direct flights between the two nations. Ambassador Frank Azuike emphasized the service’s importance in easing travel for Nigeria’s diaspora in Sierra Leone and fostering stronger cultural, economic and social connections. “With this launch, we reduce the uncertainties and challenges of long, expensive and complicated journeys, paving the way for greater convenience and collaboration,” he added.

Highlighting the broader impact, the High Commissioner noted that the airline’s arrival would enhance trade, tourism and investment opportunities, benefiting both nations. He praised Sierra Leone’s progressive vision and commitment to strengthening connectivity, emphasizing that such partnerships reflect the foresight of both countries.

Ambassador Frank Azuike also commended the Management of Overland Airways for their dedication and resilience, which made the launch a reality. “Your efforts are invaluable and this achievement is a testament to the shared vision and hard work of all stakeholders,” he said.

The introduction of the Lagos-Freetown route by Overland Airways underscores Sierra Leone’s readiness to position itself as a regional aviation hub, he underscored. Dr. Alfred Forde attributed the progress to deliberate investments in infrastructure, notably the partnership with SUMMA Group to build a state-of-the-art terminal at FNA. He noted that annual passenger throughput at the airport has surged from 140,000 in 2017 to 220,000 since the terminal's construction.

THRIVE, Partners Present Groundbreaking Findings on Early Childhood Development in Sierra Leone
By Foday Moriba Conteh

During a well-attended ceremony held on Friday 20th December 2024, the THRIVE Early Childhood Development (ECD), in partnership with Oxford Policy Management (OPN), has concluded a one-day meeting on dissemination of findings from a study on child care and informal early learning in hard-to-reach communities in Sierra Leone. The event which was held at New Brookfields Hotel in Freetown aimed to serve as an opportunity where researchers shared their evidence-based insights, highlight challenges and foster collaboration to improve early learning in underserved areas.

In her address, Professor Mary Hodges, Principal Investigator said the study, conducted to evaluate public perceptions and access to early childhood education (ECE), underscores a significant demand for early education services across the country, even in the most remote areas.

Prof. Mary Hodges emphasized the public's readiness for ECE, stating, “There is a resounding demand for early child education nationwide. Even in hard-to-reach villages, parents are eager to enroll their children as young as three years old in school. However, accessibility remains a key barrier, particularly in remote communities where the journey to the nearest school is a significant challenge.”

She added that public opinion on the importance of early childhood education has undergone a dramatic shift over the past two decades. Parents now recognize its role in preparing children for primary school and improving their academic performance.

While commending the Government's progress in implementing Early Childhood Development (ECD) programs, Prof. Mary Hodges noted that gaps remain in reaching remote communities. “There are many more villages than schools and distance continues to be a barrier. Building schools where population density supports them is a step forward, but for younger children, the distance is often too great,” she said.

Prof. Mary Hodges called for greater inclusivity in ECD initiatives, particularly by collaborating with Sierra Leone's Islamic education network. “The Islamic community has a widespread network of madrasas and kharanthas, with Imams teaching at the village level. Integrating these educators into Government programs could significantly expand access to early child education,” she recommended.

The findings of the study offer critical insights to guide policymakers, educators and development partners in addressing barriers to early childhood education. Prof. Mary Hodges praised the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education for its commitment to improving ECD services and urged continued collaboration and innovation to meet the growing demand.

Abu Bakarr Kuyateh, Director of Programs and Services at the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), outlined the Government’s commitment to improving early childhood development (ECD) through policies, infrastructure and teacher support. “Three years ago, the Government mandated that every primary school must include an ECD center, commonly referred to as a nursery school. This policy has been the foundation of our efforts to ensure access to quality early education,” he explained.

He highlighted several achievements under the ECD initiative, including the construction of 59 state-of-the-art ECD centers across the country, provision of teacher training, learning materials and Government-paid salaries for ECD educators, recruitment of over 1,000 ECD teachers to strengthen early learning programs and expansion of classroom facilities in primary schools to accommodate ECD centers.

“These efforts reflect our determination to address challenges and ensure that every child has a strong foundation for future academic success,” Abu Bakarr Kuyateh added.

The study, conducted by Thrive Early Childhood Development (ECD) in collaboration with partners, revealed key insights into the challenges and opportunities in ECD programs. It emphasized the importance of early morning feeding programs for children in underserved communities, noting the link between nutrition and learning outcomes.

Abu Bakarr Kuyateh assured that the Government is already expanding its school feeding program to include ECD centers, ensuring children receive nutritious meals to support their learning. “We have started providing school feeding and fee subsidies for some ECD centers, recognizing their critical role in childhood development,” he said.

He acknowledged concerns about the implementation of recommendations from studies like this one, assuring stakeholders that the Ministry is committed to acting on the findings. “We have already begun implementing several recommendations, such as constructing ECD facilities and training educators. While challenges remain, we are steadfast in our efforts to improve early childhood education,” he stated.

Regina Yillah, Country Manager for Thrive and Founder & CEO of the Institute for Development (IFD) Sierra Leone, highlighted the need to leverage existing community resources to address gaps in Early Childhood Education (ECE). “We’ve seen so many entry points, including Islamic platforms such as madrasas, which can be harnessed in the short term while we work towards formalizing child care and education systems,” she said.

The study examined the realities of informal early childhood development in Sierra Leone, where only 20% of children currently have access to formal education. Despite these challenges, the research uncovered positive practices within communities, such as creative play and parental engagement.

Regina Yillah underscored the broader concept of early childhood development, emphasizing that it encompasses more than just academic skills. “ECD is not just about learning your ABCs; it’s about being healthy, learning hygiene practices like hand washing and accessing nutritious food,” she explained.

She pointed out that parents often lack knowledge about nutritious food options available locally and stressed the importance of equipping communities with tools to prepare children for school readiness.

The Country Manager for Thrive and Founder & CEO of the Institute for Development (IFD) expressed pride in IFD’s efforts to enhance local research capacity, which she described as “mind-blowing.” “We’ve trained young researchers who are now providing high-quality evidence to inform Government and development partner programs,” she said.

She praised the observational approach of the study, noting, “This is the first anthropological study I’ve seen where researchers carefully observed communities without rushing to conclusions. The insights are powerful.”

Regina Yillah assured attendees that collaboration with the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) and the Ministry of Health has been integral to the research process. “This research isn’t just a report to sit on a shelf. We’ve been engaging the ECD unit and other stakeholders from the start, ensuring that findings are already in their decision-making processes,” she said.

As the study's findings were shared, Regina Yillah reiterated the long-term commitment of IFD and Thrive to advancing ECD in Sierra Leone. “This is about maximizing the critical first eight years of a child’s life, which are vital for their development,” she concluded.

The event brought together representatives from Government Ministries, health professionals and education stakeholders, all of whom were encouraged to use the findings as a foundation for actionable policies and programs to improve early childhood development across Sierra Leone. https://thecalabashnewspaper.com/thrive-partners-present-groundbreaking-findings-on-early-childhood-development-in-sierra-leone/

Lawyers’ Society Condemns Parliament’s Decision to Remove Auditor General
By Ibrahim Sesay

Parliament has endorsed the removal of Auditor General Lara Taylor-Pearce and her deputy, Tamba Momoh, following the recommendations of a tribunal. The decision, taken on December 20, 2024, has drawn significant backlash from the Lawyers’ Society, which has expressed grave concerns over the parliamentary process and adherence to constitutional mandates.

The Lawyers’ Society, in a strongly worded statement, highlighted alleged procedural irregularities surrounding the vote. They noted that several Members of Parliament were reportedly not given sufficient notice about the vote and others were out of the country on official duties at the time. The statement described these actions as a "troubling disregard" for the constitutional importance of the decision and suggested that they may have been deliberate attempts to bypass due process.

Citing Sections 119(9) and 137(7) of Sierra Leone’s Constitution, the Lawyers’ Society emphasized that the removal of the Auditor General requires a two-thirds majority of the total membership of Parliament, not just those present during the vote. The interpretation offered by the Speaker of Parliament that the two-thirds threshold applied only to members in attendance was firmly rejected by the Lawyers’ Society, which argued that it undermined the integrity of the decision-making process and cast doubt on the vote's legitimacy.

“This apparent haste to remove the Auditor General without ensuring the necessary procedural propriety is deeply concerning,” the Lawyers’ Society stated. They further warned of the broader implications of the decision, particularly its impact on the independence of institutions tasked with holding the executive accountable.

“The Auditor General’s office, which enjoys protections similar to those of judges of the Superior Court of Judicature, plays a critical role in upholding accountability and transparency in governance. If such an office can be removed under questionable circumstances, it sets a worrying precedent for the future independence of our judiciary and other oversight institutions,” the statement added.

The Society has called on Parliament to reconsider its decision and to adhere to its established constitutional obligations. They urged citizens and civil society organizations to demand transparency and accountability from their representatives. The statement also appealed to the international community to support efforts to safeguard governance institutions and promote the rule of law in Sierra Leone.

As the controversy unfolds, the Lawyers’ Society has reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for justice, fairness and the integrity of democratic institutions. “We will continue to monitor this situation closely and take necessary actions to uphold the rule of law in Sierra Leone,” the statement concluded.

Deputy Minister KLM Under Fire for Unfounded Claims Against Vice President
By Amin Kef (Ranger)

In a development that has sparked nationwide attention, Deputy Minister of Sports, Kai Lawrence Mbayo (KLM), is facing mounting criticism for his controversial public allegations against Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh. The dispute centers on an alleged 264-carat diamond from Kono, a matter that is already being handled by the Judiciary.

Deputy Minister KLM has attempted to portray himself as a central figure in the diamond case. However, his actual connection to the 264-carat diamond appears tenuous at best. During his testimony in court as a prosecution witness, he admitted that he was neither the license holder nor a partner of the complainant, Benjamin Marrer. His evidence was widely criticized as hearsay, with even the prosecution showing little interest in his testimony.

Despite the ongoing court proceedings, KLM has continued to make unsubstantiated allegations against respected individuals in high-ranking Government positions. This has raised questions about his motives, with many accusing him of seeking personal gain.

Observers have questioned why KLM failed to raise these claims under oath when testifying before Magistrate Santigie Bangura. Instead, he has resorted to making allegations outside of the courtroom, a move seen by many as a deliberate attempt to avoid legal scrutiny.

KLM has been accused of using the controversy to position himself as a stakeholder in the diamond case. Critics argue that his actions are driven by self-interest, with some suggesting he is attempting to extract financial benefits. Allegations have also surfaced that he is seeking to blackmail Jihad Basma, one of the accused persons in the case.

Critics have labeled him a "rabble-rouser" and a "nonentity," claiming that his recent antics are part of a desperate bid to stay relevant.

President Dr. Julius Maada Bio has been unequivocal in his stance on judicial independence. During the swearing-in of the new Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, the President stressed the importance of upholding justice without external interference. “Justice delayed is justice denied,” he declared, underscoring the need for timely and impartial judicial processes.

The President further affirmed that "orders from above" do not come from him, refuting claims that he had any personal interest in the Kono diamond case. This statement was seen as a clear message to public officials and stakeholders to respect the independence of the Judiciary.

The public backlash against KLM’s conduct has been swift and widespread. Many view his actions as a direct attack on Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh and by extension, an affront to President Bio’s administration. Critics argue that KLM’s behavior is undermining the integrity of the Government and its commitment to justice reform.

Civil Society organizations, Government officials and members of the public have called on President Bio to take decisive action against KLM. The demand for his dismissal is growing louder, with some arguing that his continued presence in Government undermines efforts to promote accountability and discipline among public officials.

The controversy surrounding KLM has reignited discussions on the ethical standards expected of public officials. Many have cited American author and preacher John Maxwell’s famous quote: “Power really is a test of character. In the hands of a person of integrity, it is of tremendous benefit; in the hands of a tyrant, it causes terrible destruction.”

KLM’s critics argue that his actions are a reflection of deeper issues of accountability within the political system. They emphasize that the role of public servants should be to serve with integrity, not to pursue personal gain or sow discord.

As the nation awaits President Bio’s response, many believe that swift action against KLM would send a strong message that the Government is serious about upholding the rule of law and protecting its image. Commentators have stressed that the Deputy Minister’s conduct is a distraction from ongoing justice reforms and that his removal would demonstrate the administration’s zero-tolerance approach to indiscipline among public officials.

“It’s time for the President to show this desperate politician the exit door,” remarked one commentator, a sentiment echoed by several others. The public’s patience is wearing thin and the pressure on President Bio to act decisively continues to mount. https://thecalabashnewspaper.com/deputy-minister-klm-under-fire-for-unfounded-claims-against-vice-president/

Get Your Biometric ID Card Today – A Step Towards Safer Holidays and Secure Services
By Amin Kef (Ranger)

As the year draws to a close, Sierra Leoneans and residents across the country are urged to secure their Biometric ID Cards and carry them at all times during the festive season for security reasons. With the holiday season approaching, the National Civil Registration Authority (NCRA) emphasizes the importance of these cards for both personal safety and national security.

Since their introduction in early 2023, Biometric ID Cards have been a key tool in modernizing identity verification, reducing fraud and streamlining access to vital public and private sector services. In response to the growing need for enhanced security and efficiency, NCRA calls on all citizens and non-citizens residing in Sierra Leone to obtain these cards.

The NCRA stresses that acquiring a Biometric ID Card is not just a personal responsibility but also a civic obligation. All Sierra Leonean citizens aged 12 and above are eligible to apply for a Biometric ID Card, which can be obtained at any NCRA office nationwide. For convenience, new registration centers have been established in major towns such as Bo, Kenema, Makeni and Port Loko, making the process more accessible to applicants throughout the country.

The NCRA issues three types of Biometric ID Cards:

- National ID Cards for Sierra Leonean citizens aged 12 and above.

- ECOWAS ID Cards for citizens of ECOWAS member states residing in Sierra Leone.

- Non-National ID Cards for foreign residents, which are required to obtain work and residence permits.

In line with parliamentary requirements, foreign nationals residing in Sierra Leone must obtain Non-National ID Cards, which are now essential for accessing key services, all linked to the National Identification Number (NIN) embedded in each card.

These advanced Biometric ID Cards are equipped with state-of-the-art security features, including fingerprint scanning, facial recognition and a secure chip that stores critical personal data. These features make it increasingly difficult to engage in identity fraud, offering better protection for individuals and institutions alike.

"The primary goal of these advanced Biometric ID Cards is to enhance both national and individual security," stated an NCRA official. These cards are designed to safeguard businesses, Government institutions and individuals from identity theft and other fraudulent activities.

In addition to their role in strengthening national security, Biometric ID Cards simplify access to essential services. Citizens and non-citizens alike can use the cards to open bank accounts, access remittance services and verify their identities for telecommunications and financial transactions. The integration of NINs with these services enables faster, safer, and more efficient processes for users.

To support the application process, the NCRA has set up registration centers in key locations across the country, including:

- NCRA Headquarters, 2 Walpole Street

- NCRA Office, 23B Off Kingharman Road

- NCRA Office, Kennedy Street

- NCRA Branch Office, 230 Lumley Road (By the Roundabout)

- NCRA Office, Waterloo (Opposite the Police Station)

Additionally, regional centers in towns like Bo, Kenema and Makeni are available for easier access.

The NCRA has also accelerated efforts to link NINs with mobile phone SIM cards, aiming to further enhance national security and prevent cybercrime. Director-General Mohamed Mubashir Massaquoi recently chaired a high-level meeting with stakeholders, including Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), the National Telecommunications Commission (NaCTA) and the Sierra Leone Police (SLP). The initiative, which will link NINs to SIM cards, is expected to simplify identity verification and enhance the security of financial transactions and communications.

Failure to link NINs to SIM cards will result in the deactivation of critical telecommunications services, including voice calls and mobile money transfers. Citizens are strongly encouraged to act promptly to avoid any service interruptions during the festive season.

Obtaining a Biometric ID Card is a simple and transparent process. Here’s how to apply:

- Visit any NCRA office or registration center.

- Fill out the required registration form with your personal information.

- Submit your biometric data, including fingerprints and facial recognition.

- Collect your Biometric ID Card after processing.

With multiple centers now available nationwide, the process has never been more accessible. Sierra Leoneans and residents are urged to take advantage of this opportunity to secure their Biometric ID Cards and link their NINs to mobile SIM cards before the festive season begins.

This drive is a crucial step in building a safer, more secure Sierra Leone. By securing your Biometric ID Card and ensuring it is carried with you at all times, you contribute to a more secure, efficient and digitally inclusive nation. Visit your nearest NCRA office today and help make the country safer for all. https://thecalabashnewspaper.com/get-your-biometric-id-card-today-a-step-towards-safer-holidays-and-secure-services/

Partnering to Serve Humanity Hosts Interfaith Dialogue and Rice Distribution
By Ibrahim Sesay

Partnering to Serve Humanity Consortium, which includes Caritas Freetown, Healey International Relief Foundation, Tzu Chi Foundation and. LANYI Foundation, has once again demonstrated its commitment to supporting vulnerable communities through a rice distribution event. The event, which was an interfaith dialogue, held at the Negus/Negas Complex brought together faith leaders, a Government representative and community members.

The theme of the event was centered around spiritual growth, compassion and peace building.

Archbishop Edward Tamba Charles, President of the Interreligious Council, expressed gratitude to the Tzu Chi Foundation for their continued partnership in aiding those in need. "I want to thank all those who are present because they're helping us help others. All religions emphasize love of God and love of neighbor," he said, urging beneficiaries to extend support to others in need.

Rev. Fr. Peter Konteh, Executive Director of Caritas Freetown, highlighted the relationship with Tzu Chi, which has been going on for a decade. "This distribution has been going on for eight years and next February we will celebrate our ten-year partnership with a delegation to Taiwan," he revealed. Rev. Fr. Peter Konteh also emphasized the importance of empowering local farmers to produce rice for future distributions to enhance the local economy.

The interfaith dialogue underscored the importance of inclusivity, with Rev. Fr. Peter Konteh commending the involvement of Rastafarian representatives in the interfaith dialogue. "Their inclusion has helped us understand the Rastafarian faith better," he said.Rev. Fr. Peter Konteh also commented on the collective position of faith leaders against the abortion bill currently being debated, describing it as a moral issue that requires unity among religious leaders.

Sheikh Fomba Swaray echoed these sentiments, criticizing the term "safe abortion" as paradoxical. "Every religion stresses the preservation of human life and this bill contradicts that belief," he said, adding that the Interreligious Council has submitted its position to parliament.

Deputy Minister of Social Welfare ,Mohamed Haji-Kella, acknowledged the strong arguments presented by religious leaders while emphasizing the importance of interfaith dialogue and religious tolerance. "Cabinet brings together diverse voices to create a balanced position on the bill, which is then handed to Parliament for consideration," he stated.

A key highlight of the event was the gratitude expressed by beneficiaries. Mariama Sillah, one of the recipients, said, "In hard times like this, receiving this rice will help me and my family during this festive period. I want to thank Caritas for this support."

Health Alert and AY-Mechanism Advocate for Passage of Safe Motherhood Bill
By Foday Moriba Conteh

On Wednesday, December 18, 2024, Victor Lansana Koroma, the Executive Director of Health Alert Sierra Leone, delivered a passionate address during a press conference held at GGEM Hall on John Street in Freetown, urging Parliament to pass the Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Care Bill, 2024.

The proposed Bill, currently under legislative review, aims to transform maternal health in Sierra Leone by addressing the country’s alarmingly high maternal mortality rate and ensuring access to reproductive health services for women and girls.

In his statement, Victor Lansana Koroma, the Executive Director of Health Alert Sierra Leone emphasized the urgency of the Bill, citing the 3 to 4 maternal deaths that occur daily in Sierra Leone due to preventable complications during pregnancy and childbirth. He painted a vivid picture of the devastating impact on families and communities, underscoring the need for bold action.

“The Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Care Act, 2024, is more than just legislation,” Koroma stated. “It is a promise to the women of this nation a promise that their lives matter, their health is a priority, and their future deserves protection.”

Koroma highlighted the transformative potential of the Bill, which seeks to enhance healthcare services for pregnant women, mothers, and children, guarantee access to prenatal care, safe delivery, and postnatal support, provide affordable healthcare to marginalized and vulnerable groups and address unsafe abortions by offering safe, regulated options under specific circumstances, such as cases of rape, incest, or non-viable pregnancies.

Koroma stressed that the Bill is not about promoting safe termination but about saving lives and ensuring dignity for women facing difficult circumstances.

Imagining a Sierra Leone where every woman has access to quality healthcare, every girl can stay in school, and no family loses a mother to preventable causes, Koroma called for collective commitment from all stakeholders.

“This Bill will save lives, empower young girls, and strengthen families and communities,” he asserted.

Koroma urged Parliamentarians to demonstrate leadership by passing the Bill, signaling a commitment to women’s rights and health. He also called on citizens to engage in open conversations about reproductive health and join efforts to build a healthier, more inclusive Sierra Leone.

Health Alert Sierra Leone, he noted, stands ready to support the implementation of the Bill by educating communities, advocating for resources, and holding stakeholders accountable.

Speaking on behalf of Sierra Leone’s youth, Mohamed Awuah Kamara, Team Lead of AY-Mechanism underscored the importance of the Bill in safeguarding the future of young people and their families. He noted that with youth representing the largest segment of the country’s population, addressing gaps in maternal and reproductive health is pivotal for national progress.

“Supporting this Act is not just about improving health outcomes,” Kamara stated. “It is about securing a better future for all young people in Sierra Leone.”

Kamara outlined several key areas where the Bill will make a significant impact which include reducing Teenage Pregnancies, adding that with Sierra Leone ranking among the countries with the highest teenage pregnancy rates globally, Kamara stressed the need for comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education. He highlighted that over 30% of girls aged 15-19 become mothers, a statistics the Bill seeks to reduce by empowering adolescents to make informed decisions.

Ensuring Access to Youth-Friendly Health Services Kamara pointed out that many young people face stigma when seeking reproductive healthcare. The Bill, he noted, mandates the provision of non-judgmental, youth-friendly services tailored to adolescents' needs.

Ending Unsafe Abortions he pointed out that unsafe abortions remain a major contributor to maternal deaths, particularly among young women. Kamara emphasized the Bill’s provisions for safe abortion services under specific conditions, which will save countless lives and protect women from dangerous, unregulated procedures.

Kamara called for immediate action to ensure the success of the Safe Motherhood Bill, urging leaders to prioritize the following age-appropriate sexual and reproductive health education in schools and communities, confidential and youth-friendly health services, free from stigma or judgment and safe spaces for adolescents to access care and support.

Addressing Parliament, Kamara urged swift passage of the Bill, emphasizing its importance for the next generation. “By prioritizing maternal and reproductive health, we are investing in a brighter future for Sierra Leone,” he concluded.

The Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Care Act, 2024, has garnered strong support from youth leaders like Kamara, who see it as a beacon of hope for a healthier, empowered, and more equitable society. The call for action now lies in the hands of Sierra Leone’s leaders to make this vision a reality.

The Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Care Bill, 2024, is seen as a critical step toward achieving gender equality and reducing maternal mortality in Sierra Leone. Its passage would reflect a national commitment to protecting and uplifting women and girls, paving the way for a brighter future for all Sierra Leoneans. https://thecalabashnewspaper.com/health-alert-and-ay-mechanism-advocate-for-passage-of-safe-motherhood-bill/

165 Fullahs Arrested in Freetown: Fullah Leaders Call for Swift, Fair Investigation
By Foday Moriba Conteh

On December 15th and 16th, 2024, a total of 165 Fullahs were reportedly arrested in Freetown by officers of the Sierra Leone Police and the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces. Although the arrested individuals were eventually released following the intervention of the Fullah community, the incident is widely perceived as a spillover effect of the recent arrest and deportation of Sierra Leoneans from Guinea.

In response, the leadership of the Fullah community in Sierra Leone held a Press Briefing on Thursday 19th December, 2024, to update the public on their engagements regarding the incidents. The statement, signed by Abdulai Barrie (Chieftaincy), Alhaji Mohamed Bailor Jalloh (Fullah Progressive Union) and Alhaji M.S. Jalloh (Tabital Pulaaku Sierra Leone), condemned the treatment of Fullah nationals and called for swift justice.

The press statement, read by Abdulai Barrie, described the arrests as involving unlawful detention, harassment, intimidation and degrading treatment of Fullah nationals. The leadership commended the Government of Sierra Leone for its initial steps, including a public condemnation of the actions by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education, which reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of all citizens.

The Fullah leadership emphasized their desire to meet with President Julius Maada Bio to seek assurances that such incidents will not recur. They also called for an expedited and impartial investigation to ensure those responsible for the acts or for failing to prevent them are held accountable.

The leadership urged the Government to address the matter decisively, highlighting the importance of unity and inclusivity in preserving national harmony. They appealed for an end to ethnic profiling and actions that could alienate any group of Sierra Leoneans.

Acknowledging the solidarity shown by Sierra Leoneans across the country, the Fullah leaders called on all citizens to work together to safeguard the nation’s shared values of peace, unity and mutual respect.

The statement concluded with a pledge from the Fullah leadership to continue engaging with the Government and stakeholders to maintain the peace and stability of Sierra Leone.

Sahr O. Gbekie, Chairman of the Council of Tribal Heads, described the arrest of the Fullahs as unfortunate and unacceptable. He noted that Sierra Leoneans have lived harmoniously for years and emphasized the need to uphold this spirit of unity.

He called on the appropriate authorities to address the issue amicably to foster national cohesion, highlighting the Council’s diversity, he explained that it comprises Tribal Heads from various ethnic groups across the country.

Sahr Gbekie commended the Government of Sierra Leone, particularly the Ministry of Information and Civic Education, for publicly condemning the incident.

He also informed the gathering that Parliament had summoned the Inspector General of Police and other relevant stakeholders to discuss the matter. In his concluding remarks, he urged everyone to remain calm as they await the outcome of the parliamentary proceedings.

This incident has sparked widespread discussions about ethnic relations and the need for systemic reforms to prevent such occurrences in the future. https://thecalabashnewspaper.com/165-fullahs-arrested-in-freetown-fullah-leaders-call-for-swift-fair-investigation/

NMA and EPA Officials Expose Widespread Illegal Mining in Diang Chiefdom
By Ibrahim Sesay

Senior officials from the National Minerals Agency (NMA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on Friday December 13, 2024 visited illegal mining sites in Diang Chiefdom, Koinadugu District, to investigate unauthorized mining activities, particularly those affecting the protected Lake Sonfon.

The visit followed reports circulating on social media alleging that community members, financiers and foreign nationals were involved in unregulated mining operations. The objective of the visit was to assess the extent of the illegal mining and demonstrate the Government’s commitment to environmental protection and resource management.

Isaac Kallon, NMA’s Regional Manager for Makeni, confirmed the illegality of the operations, stating that mining in Lake Sonfon is explicitly prohibited. “We’ve observed illegal activities, including mining within the lake, which is entirely unauthorized. This is not a new issue. We’ve raised concerns and conducted compliance audits, but we face limitations,” the Regional Manager remarked.

He assured that the NMA would compile its findings and escalate the matter to higher authorities for necessary action. Isaac Kallon’s statement underscores the Government's resolve to confront illicit mining practices that threaten environmental sustainability and lawful resource management.

Abdul Kebbie, Regional Environmental Officer for the EPA, highlighted the environmental and economic consequences of illegal mining in the area. “No licenses have been issued for these activities, and as a result, the government is losing significant revenue,” Abdul Kebbie stated.

He emphasized that illegal mining operations leave behind open pits, contribute to biodiversity loss, cause deforestation and pose health risks due to the absence of safety measures. “The EPA Act requires all mining projects to undergo environmental screening before licenses are issued. This ensures sustainability and minimizes risks,” Abdul Kebbie added.

He also addressed allegations that military personnel assigned to protect the area were engaging in illegal mining. “The community accuses the military of mining at night instead of protecting the area. These allegations undermine trust and further complicate the situation,” he noted, signaling the need for thorough investigations into the claims.

The fact-finding mission also uncovered an illegal gold mining site in Foriah. Foday Bah Turay, Section Chief of Diang Chiefdom, provided context on the situation in Foriah. “Last week, there were rumors of gold at a specific site, leading to fights among people trying to claim mining spaces. I was alerted by Resident Minister North, Abu Abu, who advised seeking security protection to prevent further chaos,” Foday Bah Turay explained.

He called on the Government to intervene and bring the situation under control for the benefit of the community and all stakeholders involved.

The authorities are expected to present a detailed report of their findings and recommendations to the Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources for immediate action. This intervention is seen as a crucial step in addressing unauthorized mining activities and ensuring compliance with Sierra Leone’s environmental protection and mineral resource management laws. https://thecalabashnewspaper.com/nma-and-epa-officials-expose-widespread-illegal-mining-in-diang-chiefdom/

By offering life-changing surgeries at no cost, it aims to restore hope and dignity to individuals living with physical impairments. These conditions often have significant social, emotional and psychological impacts, especially on children born with cleft lip and palate deformities. The camp’s goal is not only to enhance physical health but also to improve the overall well-being of beneficiaries.

This initiative aligns with Choithram Hospital’s enduring legacy of providing compassionate, high-quality medical care.
